About me
About me:
I was born in a run-down Soviet hospital in Moscow, Russia. I was 12 pounds. The hospital had no anesthesia, and doctors haven't heard of a Cesarean. My mother barely survived the ordeal and shivered at anybody's suggestion that she has another child. So I remained the only child, born on February 29th, obliging everyone to remember my birthday at least once in 4 years. I was told by my animal-loving parents that our dog was my elder brother. I believed it. On the first day of class in kindergarten, proudly: ?My name is Olga. I have a brother. He is a spaniel.? "Twenty tenth" - I confidently counted myself out loud in a lineup during a gymnastics show. I was 5 years old. They took gymnastics very seriously in Russia, and were focused on making us into future world champions. So it took parents a second or two before they started laughing uncontrollably. I studied classical piano in music school from 6 to 16 years old. "Everyone silent. And you, on second row of sopranos, please sing this part for us" - an order from my choir teacher who was also music school Principal. When I was finished she said: "Now I know what was wrong with this Tchaikovsky piece. Please pick up your backpack and never come to my choir again. I will write you into choir class roster and give you Bs for the rest of your time in our music school. But please never come to my choir again." I was a straight A student until high school, when I did get a couple of Bs, and became a leader of an anti-Soviet group of students protesting for change. I modeled for a Pepsi TV commercial filmed in the Red Square. I always thought I was born in the wrong country, and moved to the US the first chance I got, which was when I got a passport at the age of 18. To my family?s horror, I just picked up and left, leaving them all behind. I arrived in New York with $140, and a tourist visa. I worked as a housekeeper and babysitter in a family of orthodox jews in Monsey, New York. They had 5 kids with the 6th one on the way. How they lived, and how they acted towards each other and towards me seemed surreal. I sold balloons in a party store. But I made only $5 more per day than it cost me to get to the store and back on 4 buses. I got fired from a Mexican restaurant for overheating beans. I met a retired venture capitalist who said he can see an entrepreneur a thousand miles away. He paid for my degree and put me to work in one of his startups. He said I didn't owe him anything, but should do something meaningful for someone else some day. I still owe it to someone. I jumped over undergrad degree and got a Master of Sciences degree from Colorado University at Boulder. I produced C-SPAN-like TV show, lottery TV show, and music TV show in Russia. I?ve earned MBA from Harvard Business School. I did investment banking, and am now an entrepreneur. My grandfather was a commander of an artillery battery that had so much heroism shown during WWII that his battery was given the honor of starting to bomb Berlin first once Hitler decided to not surrender. His artillery gun is in Moscow's WWII museum. My great grandfather was executed by Stalin's KGB in 1937. Shot in the back of his head and dumped into a mass grave. My great grandmother lost her husband during WWI. She built a house in the middle of Siberia with her bare hands to raise her three daughters. My great grandmother was Polish and came to Moscow in 1918 to visit her daughter, who married a Russian man, and their newborn. During her visit, Soviet state decided to close the borders. She wrote a letter to her husband in Poland saying he is free and should live his life as he chooses. My other grandfather was a Hero of the Soviet Union (the highest decoration one could get) for taking an action during the Siege of Leningrad that turned the battle around. Post WWII he became General Major of KGB, a diplomat and a spy in Seria and Lebanon.
