About me
About me:
I write for a living, mostly about food and wine, and mostly about the latter. Despite that, I am not a wine snob, and lest anyone think that Bacchus has cast an unshakable spell over me, I also have written on sundry of other topics including art, music and politics. Academically, my true expertise lay in Middle Eastern and African politics and history (though some might say it lays in French pastry). And, my next book will bring many of these themes, history, politics, culture and gastronomy together. Late last year, I became a director of an arts and culture center in Lower Manhattan, which allows me to see the practical side of the culture world, as well as become friends with some of New York's most creative people. Personal interest and work allow me the opportunity to go abroad a lot. I usually have the opportunity to be in Europe a few times a year, though I manage to spend time in the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia, too. I'm fortunate to have diverse friends full of diverse ideas, who I enjoy bringing together at a table on more than rare occasions (friends and ideas, both). I cook, I bake, and clean up afterwards, though I don't much like doing the latter. (Like being clean, though, except when I want to be dirty). Books, non-fiction, fiction, prose and poetry, are devoured in my presence. Latin, Middle Eastern, and jazz music are most commonly played on my stereo, though, at times, I revisit my past and put on a punk album. (If I'm really nostalgic, I whip out a tune on the accordion I played as a child). I also love opera. I am open-minded to a fault but have strong beliefs about social and economic justice, as well as the need to respect the beliefs of others. Healthy and attractive, I also have a good sense of style. Confident, too.
