About me:
I'm an adventurous and creative spirit now somewhat tamed. I've been living more or less according to plan -- see the world, collect the stuff of books, and then write. I began as a journalist, shifted to running media shops for Congressmen, Senators and political campaigns, including a Presidential (we didn't win), did a private sector stint at a major national startup, and landed a few years ago at an interesting federal agency. Along the way, I wrote a non-fiction book with a Senator and put in eight years in the Navy Reserve, more as a poet-bureaucrat than poet-warrior. At this writing, I'm about to begin collaborating with a professional screenwriter to adapt my political thriller into a script.An unexpected epiphany came during an MFA program in creative writing that I finished last May. I had signed up mainly to hone my craft and workshop the novel into shoppable shape. But serious fiction writing forced me to see the world in much greater depth and detail. As a journalist and political and government operative, I had sized up people in terms of their strengths, weaknesses and agendas. But I had rarely probed their souls ' or my own. Now, it's like seeing the world in high-definition.I do prefer to live and work in a world of ideas, rather than just chasing a buck or enjoying the scenery; to live the examined life. Work has taken me around the country, around the world and under the sea, but away from the job, I'm pretty mellow ' movies, bike rides, museums, restaurants, books, country drives, hitting a tennis ball. Can do some good impressions, and ' I'm told ' some lousy ones. Stay in shape, eat my spinach and live pretty clean, with a weakness for frozen yogurt. Basically, I'd like to think I'm a good guy -- decent, caring, honest, moral and loyal ' with a warm and fun side.
